Top Shooting Tips for Improved Marksmanship

Posted by CHL Targets on Aug 6th 2022

There's nothing worse than missing the perfect shot. Whether you're sighting in at a shooting competition or preparing for a kill shot on a big game animal, you need to be accurate under pressure. Check-out these top shooting tips to enhance your accuracy and discover why CHL Targets can help you to be a more accurate marksman. Don’t let poor-quality targets prevent you from increasing your short and long range accuracy.

1) Learn to Block Distractions
A cheering crowd, a chirping bird, or unexpected weather can all disturb the best shot. Whether you have a split second to strike your target, or you've been lining it up for what seems like an eternity, it's necessary to have laser focus while aiming and executing the shot.

A distracted shot is a bad shot. Learn to get in the zone and block out the most common distractions. Regulate your breathing, properly support your rifle, and make each shot, the shot of your life. Shutting out disturbances is a discipline you'll want to master, since you never know what distractions will inevitably turn up on the gun range or in the wild.

Some interruptions come from fellow shooters. If you're heading out to your favorite local gun range with a group of friendlies, set-up some ground rules prior to arrival. Turning off cell phones, finding out a few hand signals, and also other methods can minimize the threat of an unforeseen sound or remark ruining your shot.

Of course, wildlife won't comply with your no-talking-while-aiming rules. Discover the audios of local wildlife if you have the time. Do not let an unexpected eagle cry, bird call, or deer bleat sidetrack you as you're sighting in on your kill shot.

2) Properly Support Your Firearm
Some shooters resort to a bipod to stabilize their long rifle. Regrettably, this convenience isn't always on-hand when you need it. Affordable shooting occasions and searching journeys alike have several situations where you don't have time to take out your stand and settle your gun.

It’s time to learn how to support your own firearm. Practice holding your rifle, shotgun, or pistol steady while standing, sitting, or lying down. Firing from a standing position is never going to be as accurate as a supported position, but the practice helps you improve your accuracy in any situation. Yet the practice helps you boost your accuracy in any kind of situation.

For the most accurate long-range shot with a rifle, spend some time to get comfortable. Lay down as well as find new ways to support the weight of your rifle. A knapsack will certainly do in a pinch. Relax your arm joint on a pack, a stump, or a tree branch to align your shot. While you’ll never completely remove your wobble, you can learn to stabilize it long enough to take on shots over 200 yards.

3) Shoot For the Long Shot
What's your comfortable accurate range? Some marksmen will not focus on a target more than 200 yards distance, while others can accurately shoot steel targets from 500 yards or more. There’s nothing wrong with preparing and improving on making long shots, so take some time to practice at greater distances. Consider making a drop chart to find out how to aim at targets further than your comfortable shooting distance.

Do not wait to practice long shots when setting your sights on a 12-point buck or in a shooter competition. Practice makes perfect every time. The more you practice, the better you'll be at making harder and longer shots. Utilize a steel target that won't damage after the first couple of shots and prepare to target at your preferred distance.

4) Choose the Best Quality Targets

A target shooting event isn't going to last long with poor-quality targets. Don't use cheap cardboard or paper targets when you're trying to enhance your precision. It's always best to invest in a target that will certainly last. Whether you're buying paper, cardboard, or steel targets, quality matters!
